You may already know that gay and bisexual men are the population most affected by HIV in the U.S. Black gay and bisexual men are getting hit particularly hard by the epidemic. Studies in major cities have found that, in those cities, nearly one in three black gay and bisexual men is infected with HIV, and the majority (59%) don’t even know it because they’ve never been tested or aren’t testing enough.

About the campaign

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed Testing Makes Us Stronger for black gay and bisexual men with input from black gay and bisexual men across the country. The goal of this national campaign is to promote HIV testing among black gay and bisexual men. Testing Makes Us Stronger aims to demonstrate that knowing one’s HIV status is important and empowering information.

From 2006 to 2009, new infections in young black gay and bisexual men (ages 13-29) increased by 48 percent.

But, there is reason to be hopeful, since we have the power to stop HIV. Knowing your HIV status is a powerful tool – whether you test positive or negative, you can use that knowledge to take better care of yourself and your loved ones. We encourage you to get involved and to change the course of this epidemic for yourself and for your community.

Why is this happening?

There is no easy answer to explain why black gay and bisexual men are being hit so hard by HIV. Research shows that black gay and bisexual men are not doing anything to put themselves at greater risk than other gay men; in fact, many report fewer sex partners and less drug use, which are lower risk behaviors. However, we do know that the number of new HIV infections in black gay and bisexual men is growing – this means the possibility of getting infected is also growing.

We also know that lack of access to healthcare, unemployment, racism, depression, stigma and having older sex partners (who are more likely to be infected with HIV) are additional factors that may contribute to gay and bisexual men being more likely to get this disease.

Another contributing issue is that some men think they can tell if a partner is positive or negative. But you can’t tell if a person has HIV just by looking at him or her. Many gay and bisexual men may think they do not have HIV because they feel fine. But if they don’t get tested there is no way to know for sure, and they may unknowingly give HIV to their next partner.

Other men may avoid getting tested or not tell you about their HIV status because of the stigma that may come with being HIV positive.

What you can do?

The first step in protecting your health and the health of your partners is to make sure you know your HIV status. Getting an HIV test is the only way to know if you have HIV or not. A general rule is to get tested at least annually. However, CDC has recently reported that gay and bisexual men may benefit from getting an HIV test more often, like every 3-6 months. And, to be fully in charge of your health, you need to understand the window period. This is a period right after someone gets infected but before infection shows up on an HIV test.

Knowledge is power! Knowing your status is a source of strength, not a reason for fear. When you know your status, you can take care of yourself, and you are less likely to give the virus to others. Research has shown that if people know they have HIV, they often take steps to protect their partners. For more information on the importance of frequent HIV testing for gay and bisexual men, check out the recent CDC statement on HIV testing.

It can be hard to talk to your partner about your HIV status. How do you start this important conversation? Read this helpful guide on talking about your HIV status with your partner or spouse. Information is also available for help in talking to others in your life about your HIV status — including family, friends, past sexual partners, or anyone you may have shared needles with to inject drugs.

Remember, if you test positive, medical care can help you live a longer, healthier life. You can protect your partners by using condoms every time you have sex and asking them to do the same.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

FILMMAKER PATRIK-IAN POLK OF “PUNKS” AND “NOAH’S ARC” FAME RELEASES HIS LATEST FEATURE FILM

“THE SKINNY”

ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DFW PRIDE MOVEMENT TO RELEASE HIS LATEST MOVIE IN DALLAS, TX

EXCLUSIVE WEEKEND ENGAGEMENT BEGINS APRIL 20TH

(April 12 – Dallas, TX) From the director of cult classics PUNKS and NOAH’S ARC, comes the much-anticipated third feature film from Patrik-Ian Polk: THE SKINNY, a sharply scripted comedy about a group of four young, black, gay men (Magnus, Sebastian, Kyle, Joey) and their lesbian best friend (Langston). They arrange to meet up in New York City one year after their graduation from Brown University. Their plans for a weekend of fun start off well, relaxed in each other’s company as only old friends can be. But old tensions quickly resurface.

Drinking, drugs, hidden desire and the demands of promiscuity put friendship, trust and even lives at risk. In between sharp one-liners and a great soundtrack there’s a few important lessons that these pleasure-seekers must learn for themselves. Written with a real sense of the demands of urban living, these bright and believable characters will remind you of someone you know. Remaining true to his past work, Polk addresses issues in THE SKINNY that face the LGBT community such as date-rape, infidelity, and HIV/AIDS awareness.

The film stars Jussie Smolett (the former child actor of “Mighty Ducks” & “North”, and brother of actress Jurnee Smollett), Blake Young-Fountain, Anthony Burrell, Shanika Warren-Markland and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman. Supporting cast includes alumnus of Polk’s past features such as Darryl Stephens (“Noah’s Arc”), Jennia Fredrique (“Noah’s Arc”), Wilson Cruz (“Noah’s Arc”) and Seth Gilliam (“Punks”). Also, the film introduces newcomer Dustin Ross and the feature film debut of internet sensation B. Scott.

In an exciting partnership, the filmmaker has teamed up with the DFW Pride Movement United Black Ellument, 7Connection, Touch Down Entertainment, Roy Murray of Black Knight Productions, other African American LGBT organizations and allies to promote the importance of health in the LGBT Community, especially in the Black and Latino communities. The organizations will sponsor appearances, afternoon and evening receptions and panel discussions featuring producer/director Polk and cast members Jussie Smollett, Blake Young-Fountain and Jennia Fredrique (who all appear in the Black AIDS Institute’s latest PSA campaign “Greater Than AIDS”). The Skinny director and cast will be on hand to discuss the HIV awareness story-lines in the movie and other sexual health issues of importance to the LGBT population.

“I’ve been involved with the Black AIDS Institute since the early days of my NOAH’S ARC television series, and I’ve been addressing issues of HIV and AIDS in my work since my first film PUNKS,” Polk explains. “So it makes perfect sense to partner with other African American LGBT organizations across the country to promote their great cause and highlight the HIV awareness issues raised in my new film THE SKINNY.” Patrik Ian-Polk

The film also features music written and performed by Patrik-Ian Polk. With tunes that illustrate the highs and lows of the film, Polk sings with his heart and soul to capture the essence of the movie’s message. Polk says he was inspired by artists such as Grammy-Award winning Adele, “who created a very personal album based on her romantic experiences”. Polk continues to share coyly that, “…most of the songs I wrote, although they fit very nicely in THE SKINNY, are actually about some very personal experiences with…someone very specific.”

THE SKINNY had its world premiere at the OUTFEST FUSION FILM FESTIVAL 2012 in Los Angeles, California on March 24th, where it was well-received. Fans from all over came to view the film and also watch as Patrik-Ian Polk received the 2012 Fusion Achievement Award presented by famed director/producer Lee Daniels (“Precious”), who spoke highly of Polk.

“Being a filmmaker is very, very hard. Being a black filmmaker is really, really hard work. Being a GAY BLACK filmmaker is close to impossible. And having the balls to tell gay stories in cinema the way Patrik-Ian Polk has done is inspiring to me because I don’t have those balls yet…The work jumps off the screen. His honesty, his ability to tap into the truth with all of the characters,” said Lee Daniels.

THE SKINNY also had its international premiere in two sold-out screenings, March 31st and April 1st, in London at the famed British Film Institute.

THE SKINNY opened Friday, April 6th for an exclusive one-week engagement in Atlanta at the Midtown Art Cinema (931 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, GA 30308) and Washington D.C. at the E Street Cinema (555 11th Street NW, Washington DC 20004) with more cities to follow. In Dallas, there will be a special VIP reception for the local media, allies and LGBT community leaders with Polk and the cast followed by the screening at the Magnolia Theatre located in West Village at 3699 Mckinney Ave # 100, Dallas, TX 75204. The special premiere showings are at 7:30pm and 9:45pm with DJ Frances Jaye bumping House & Neo Soul music. There will be an Invitation Only “All Black With A Touch of Red After Party” to follow at 11:30pm.

THE SKINNY ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK will be released digitally on April 17th and THE SKINNY will have its television premiere on MTV’s Logo Network this July. For more information, see http://www.skinnythemovie.com .
